Job Description

The Department of Biology at the University of Nevada, Reno, seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the broad area of Computational Biology – Neuroscience. Candidates must have a PhD, MD or an equivalent degree in biology, physics, chemistry, mathematics, neurobiology, neuroscience, computer science or related fields.

Computational biologists from a broad range of backgrounds and research interests applicable to questions in neuroscience are encouraged to apply. Outstanding applicants who identify as computational biologists, systems biologists, computational neuroscientists, systems neuroscientists, and bioinformaticians are all encouraged to apply. Of specific interest would be applicants performing computational modeling that relates to (i) molecules within a cell (including genomic, epigenomic, transcriptomic, and proteomic approaches); (ii) groups of cells within a tissue or neurons within a circuit; (iii) organisms as they interact with the environment and with each other. Collaborations with wet-lab groups in the department of Biology and the Neuroscience program would be highly encouraged. These groups include programs focused on model organisms and animals in the wild that study animal behavior, neural development, genome engineering, gene regulation, sensory systems, learning and memory, in model organisms and animals in the wild. The applicant will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses to fulfill core teaching requirements of the department of Biology, and will be encouraged to develop a course based on her/his expertise.

This position is part of a strategic expansion in the neurosciences and would complement and benefit from the recently improved high performance computing resources on the UNR campus. The candidate selected for this position is expected to develop a nationally recognized, extramurally funded computational research program. Our faculty train PhD students, and participate in undergraduate teaching. Highly competitive startup funds are available. In addition, there is potential support from existing and pending NIH COBRE career development grants.

Required Qualifications

PhD, MD or an equivalent degree in biology, physics, chemistry, mathematics, neurobiology, neuroscience, computer science or related fields.

Preferred Qualifications

Candidates with postdoctoral research experience; a strong publication record; potential for strong teaching skills; expertise that complements and expands the research capacity of the department; and the potential to develop nationally-competitive research program are desirable.
