Job Description

The University of Nevada, Reno announces an opening for a tenure-track joint position in Communication Studies and the Gender, Race, and Identity (GRI) Program at the rank of Assistant Professor, specializing in Latina/o communication studies. The successful candidate will have a strong background in interdisciplinary approaches and must have research and teaching interests in intersections of gender, race, class, ethnicity, sexuality or related areas.

We invite applications from candidates whose research and teaching focuses on Latina/o studies from a variety of communication subfields including but not limited to rhetoric, performance, family communication, intercultural communication, interpersonal communication, and/or critical theories. The successful candidate will have a strong background in some combination of research topics and methods that could include community-based research; critical race theory; border theories; queer theory; Latina identity; race, gender, and leadership; global Chicana and Latina feminisms, LGBTQ Latinx communication and culture; Latinx public advocacy and policy; participant action research (PAR); and/or interdisciplinary or intersectional work with critical/feminist/queer orientations. In addition to evidence of effective college or university teaching experience, applicants should demonstrate the ability and willingness to teach introductory, advanced undergraduate, and graduate courses in both programs, including new courses in their areas of expertise and specialized Latina/o Studies courses. An established track record of campus programming or community engagement is preferred, including demonstrated experience developing Latina/o curriculum and programming. The successful candidate should have an active research program in their areas of specialization and will typically teach a 2/3 load.

Communication Studies is a growing department with a vibrant undergraduate program with two tracks, Relational Dynamics and Public Advocacy and Civic Engagement, as well as an MA program in Communication Studies. The Gender, Race, and Identity Program currently offers the Women’s Studies major and minor; minors in Ethnic Studies, Religious Studies, and Holocaust, Genocide and Peace Studies; and a graduate certificate in Gender, Race, and Identity Studies. GRI is revising and expanding its curriculum by actively developing Latina/o Studies and Indigenous Studies concentrations, and this position is part of a cluster of hires around these concentrations. Communication Studies is a member of The School of Social Research and Justice Studies (SSRJS), and as a unit of the College of Liberal Arts, Communications Studies has developed interdisciplinary research and teaching partnerships with other SSRJS departments, the Social Psychology PhD program (http://www.unr.edu/social-psychology), and with the Gender, Race, and Identity Program (http://unr.edu/cla/gri).

Required Qualifications

Applicants should hold a PhD degree in communication studies or closely related field at the time of application or complete requirements by July 1, 2018. An active program of research, including grant activity and publication, is expected.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference will be given to social justice oriented scholars with community-engaged research serving marginalized communities.
