Full Time Equivalent

Position Type Academic Faculty

Tenure Track Tenure Track
Job Description

The University of Nevada, Reno Mechanical Engineering Department seeks a tenure-track position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level with expertise in Computational Fluid Dynamics.

Candidates at the Assistant Professor level are expected to develop independent, nationally-recognized and externally-funded scholarly research programs, and to become active in professional service. Candidates at the Associate Professor level must have a proven record of professional and academic leadership, and a distinguished national and international reputation in research. The qualifications must be consistent with the rank of Associate Professor.

Incumbents will teach existing and develop new undergraduate and graduate mechanical engineering courses.

The position will be available July 1, 2018. Full consideration will be given to candidates who apply by November 14, 2017. The salary, benefits, and start-up packages will be highly competitive.

To support the Department’s growth, a $14 million renovation of the Mechanical Engineering building was completed in August 2017. The renovation increased the buildings usable space by 3,100 ft2, and enhanced its instructional, office, administration, manufacturing and experimental/computational research facilities. It will also allow the Department to develop its planned Aerospace Engineering research and educational programs. Thanks to substantial growth in both student enrollment and tenure-track faculty positions, the College of Engineering has received funding to construct a new engineering building, scheduled to be completed in 2020. The new engineering building provides both additional space needed by the College and modern facilities capable of supporting high-tech research and laboratory space. This building will allow the College to pursue its strategic vision, serve Nevada and the nation, and educate future generations of engineering professionals.

The Mechanical Engineering Department is currently searching for 5 new faculty members. The Department will have 22.5 tenure/tenure track and lecturer faculty once these positions are filled, twice as many as in 2007. The faculty has established research programs in mechanical behavior of materials, nuclear packaging safety, biomedical and biological visco-elastic mechanics, and turbomachinery. Federal agencies (NSF, DOE, NRC, and NASA), and Ebara International Corporation are currently funding research in the Department.

Through recent hires, the Department is establishing research expertise in advanced manufacturing (laser processing of materials and tribology), atomic force microscopy, soft-actuators and robotics, tunable adhesion, fluid/solid interactions, and computational materials. The current faculty search will bring innovative expertise in aerospace engineering, system dynamics/control and robotics, and computational fluid dynamics. The University is committed to increasing its faculty size by 300 over the next 5 years to help raise its research stature to Carnegie Classification Research/Very High, R1. This provides the Department opportunities to compete for additional faculty positions as its enrollment and research funding grow.

The Department recently received support from the UNR Administration and College of Engineering to initiate an undergraduate and an externally funded graduate research program in Aerospace Engineering. This includes hiring a Program Director and an assistant professor. The Department recently established a unique graduate certificate in Nuclear Packaging. It is also part of UNR’s interdisciplinary undergraduate minors in Unmanned Autonomous Systems, Batteries and Energy Storage Technologies, Nanotechnology, and Manufacturing Quality.
