Job Description

The University of Nevada, Reno is recruiting for a NSHE Specialist I – Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) Administrator. The incumbent will be responsible for maintaining all workflow in the protocol review process as the administrator for the eSirius IACUC protocol management software system, developing, managing and implementing the UNR IACUC policies and procedures under guidance of the Attending Veterinarian, the IACUC Chair, and other IACUC members, and maintaining all official documents pertinent to the IACUC and the UNR animal care program. This includes verifying the applicable training for new personnel, verifying participation in the occupational health program for animal users, and helping to implement new methods for animal use training consistent with the 3 R’s principles and technical advances. The incumbent will organize and serve as the official recorder for all IACUC committee meetings held monthly or more often, as needed. Incumbent will provide procedural support services in use of the protocol software for IACUC members, principal investigators and Animal Resources staff and will provide orientation training for newly-appointed IACUC members. This position assists the IACUC in the investigation and reporting of animal welfare concerns, coordinates the IACUC’s semi-annual facility inspections and program reviews, and helps prepare reports of findings for the UNR VPRI/ Institutional Official and federal agencies, as applicable. The incumbent will also participate in the IACUC’s post approval monitoring program for animal studies. The incumbent will work closely with the Director of Animal Resources to prepare all regulatory accreditation documents for federal agencies and accrediting bodies and follows-up regarding the content and correspondence. This position serves as a subject matter expert regarding compliance and regulatory issues pertaining to breadth of the UNR animal care and use program, inclusive of biomedical, agricultural, and wildlife field studies, and advises the Director of Animal resources for improvements to existing procedures. UNR is a USDA registered, PHS-Assured, and AAALACi accredited institution and thus all aspects of animal care and use are expected to meet or exceed those standards.

IACUC Administrators provide support for the entirety of an institution’s animal care and use program, inclusive of biomedical, agricultural, field studies, and teaching in classes.

The typical work schedule is Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm; this is subject to change based on organizational needs.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and one year of relevant experience; OR graduation from high school or equivalent education and three years of program support experience equivalent to an Administrative Assistant III in Nevada state service which included applying complex laws and regulations, composing written materials and maintaining records; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.

Preferred Qualifications

One or more years of experience in the animal welfare regulatory environment.
