Job Description

The University of Nevada, Reno is recruiting for a Staff Research Associate 1 within the Nevada State Public Health Lab. The Staff Research Associate 1 uses extensive knowledge to independently perform high complexity laboratory analytical procedures on food and water samples. The Staff Research Associate 1 is responsible for the technical accuracy, instrument operation, quality control, and result reporting per established policies and procedures. The employee is accountable to ensure timely and accurate results are reported to the appropriate public health staff and physicians in a courteous and professional manner. Participation in state-wide training seminars with public health partners and educational symposiums (both statewide and national) will be frequent. Some support tasks will be required to maintain laboratory operations and may include specimen collection, sample handling, specimen preparation, information system procedures, customer support, and common clerical duties.

The successful incumbent will have the ability to work with self-discipline, good judgment and independence; acquire technical excellence and attention to quality detail; and have a proven track record of producing accurate results and maintaining excellence in quality in a dynamic work environment.

The typical work schedule is Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. This position may require working after hours to respond to a public health emergency and/or a flexible work-week when participating in the weekend rotation schedule. May also require on-call duties; this is subject to change based on organizational needs.

This position does not provide layoff rights and is contingent upon funding.

Required Qualifications

Additional Experience Requirements:
- This position requires experience performing highly complex laboratory testing of food samples.

- This position requires analysis experience under the following guidelines: ISO 17025 requirements, FDA programs and FERN testing.

- This position requires having a valid driver’s license at time of appointment and as a condition of continued employment.

Preferred Qualifications

- Clinical Microbiology Experience

- Clinical Molecular Biology Experience

- Experience interfacing with State and Local officials in a public health system
