Job Description

The Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Nevada, Reno invites applications for a non-tenure-track faculty position at the Research Assistant Professor level in the area of Thermal/Fluid Science, including experimental measurements and computational modeling/CFD. This position supports the Nuclear Packaging Safety and Porous Media Heat Transfer labs.

The successful candidate will be expected to conduct research, manage multiple concurrent projects, teach graduate/undergraduate mechanical engineering courses, advise/supervise student projects and research, and develop research proposals in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Successful candidates will be able to develop existing research areas, collaborate on interdisciplinary research projects, successfully publish work in peer-reviewed academic journals, and secure funding for new avenues of research. This is a full-time 12-month position, and funding and extension are subject to performance and grant awards.

The successful candidate must teach at least 1 credit per year in undergraduate or graduate courses within mechanical engineering department.

Thanks to substantial growth in both student enrollment and tenure-track faculty positions, the College of Engineering has received funding to build a new engineering building, scheduled to be completed in 2020. The new engineering building provides both additional space critically needed by the College and the modern facilities capable of supporting high-tech research and laboratory space. This building will allow the College to pursue its strategic vision, serve Nevada and the nation, and educate future generations of engineering professionals.

Required Qualifications

Candidates must have an earned doctorate or foreign equivalent in mechanical engineering or a closely related discipline, and 3 years of relevant work experience. The candidate must demonstrate the potential to (1) develop a nationally recognized, externally funded research program, (2) mentor graduate and undergraduate students, and (3) publish research results in the appropriate scholarly outlets. In addition, the candidate must have demonstrable experience in the following areas:
• Rarefied gas dynamics
• Two-phase flow and phase change in porous media
• Storage and transportation of nuclear fuel assemblies
• Computational Fluid Dynamics
