Job Description

The College of Education at the University of Nevada, Reno (Tier 1 Research University) invites applications for a tenure track assistant professor in Elementary Social Studies Education beginning in fall of 2018. The Elementary Education program provides initial teacher preparation in Social Studies through the Integrated Teacher Education Program (IETP) at the K-8 level. The University of Nevada, Reno, and College of Education offer a dual certification in Elementary Education along with Special Education, Early Childhood, or working with English Language Learners (ELL) in the Integrated Elementary Teacher Preparation program. Additionally, the Elementary Education program prepares teachers in a first time licensure program (MEd) for K-8 teaching licensure and graduate programs in Elementary Education at the Master’s level and participates in the multiple offerings for college at the PhD level.

The teaching load is 2 + 3 semester based courses related to social studies education including teaching social studies methods K-8, elementary practicum (K-8), graduate level social studies curriculum, and general elementary education courses. Other responsibilities include engaging in an ongoing, focused research program program which results in publications and funded grants and contributing to professional, university, and community service and outreach.

Courses to be taught could include, but are not limited to elementary social studies methods at the undergraduate and graduate level, assessment, and introduction to elementary K-8 education. Additionally, the successful candidate should have a background and experience in educational equity for diverse students and cultural foundations of education. Program Standards: This teaching includes advisement of mater’s of students in elementary first time licensure program (MEd) and students in the elementary education master’s of science (MS) with emphasis on social studies, and an opportunity to work with doctoral students in the emphasis area of equity and diversity & integrated STEM in education.

Required Qualifications

The successful candidate must hold an earned doctorate by August of 2018 in an educational field directly related to elementary social studies education. The candidate must have at least three years of K-8 teaching experience or equivalent that includes teaching social studies. The candidate must demonstrate productivity or strong potential in a program of research related to social studies education and grant acquisition.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference will be given to applicants with expertise in social studies education and experience in working with social studies related programs and grant acquisition.
