Job Description

The University of Nevada, Reno invites candidates for the position of Database Administrator or Senior Database Administrator in Data and Information Administration, a service unit of the Office of Information Technology division.

The Database Administrator is primarily responsible for supporting enterprise database systems while providing guidance on administration tasks to technical and non-technical staff.

In addition to the responsibilities listed above, the Senior Database Administrator will ensure continuity, evaluate new technologies, and hold general responsibility and oversight over all enterprise database systems.

Responsibilities include: Installation, configuration, and management of database management software on a variety of operating systems. Creation and administration of databases including: storage allocation, table spaces, data files, and various database objects. Database optimization, monitoring, and resolving performance related issues. Comply with security standards and policies while following best practices and standards in user roles, profiles, etc. Employ best practices for databases, storage, backup and recovery, and business continuity. Work with technical and non-technical staff to solve hardware, operating system, and performance issues. Occasional work outside business hours is required to support and manage database systems, meet deadlines, and troubleshoot and resolve critical disruptions to services.

The incumbent will work in a team environment with individuals of different competencies in database query languages and data analysis. Team members work together on most projects to meet goals and deadlines. However, autonomy and independent action is required at times to work effectively across IT.

This is an Administrative Faculty position. TIAA/CREF and other retirement options; 24 days of vacation annually; generous sick leave; tuition benefits for self and family; no state income tax or FICA.

Required Qualifications

Database Administrator Comp Grade B:

A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and 2 years of related work experience OR a master’s degree and 1 year of related work experience.
Relevant Experience: Experience in working with relational databases and database query languages.

Senior Database Administrator Comp Grade C:

A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and 4 years of related work experience OR a master’s degree and 2 years of related work experience.
Relevant Experience: Experience in administering and supporting an enterprise level relational database environment. Experience with advanced database query languages and scripting.

Schedule or Travel Requirements:
• Position often requires work outside of standard business hours
• Participation in trainings and/or conference attendance.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with Oracle and/or SQL Server Relational Database Management Systems. Experience with database environments on UNIX. Strong skills in writing SQL and PL/SQL and data analysis. Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem solving skills for databases, operating systems, and performance related issues. Experience in providing customer service to technical and non-technical staff.
