Job Description

A postdoctoral fellow position is immediately available in the laboratory of Professor Kathleen Keef at the University of Nevada, Reno, to study the role of interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC) in the regulation of motility and as mediators of neuromuscular transmission in the internal anal sphincter (IAS). Most recently this topic has been addressed by examining voltage-gated calcium channels (Cav1.2) and calcium activated chloride channels (ANO1) in the generation of slow waves by ICC in the IAS (Cobine et al, 2017). Ongoing confocal imaging studies explore this topic using Kit-GCaMP6f and SM-GCaMP3 mice which selectively express the calcium indicator GCaMP in ICC or in smooth muscle cells. Other techniques routinely undertaken by the laboratory include microelectrode electrophysiology, RT-PCR, Western blotting, immunohistochemistry, fluorescence activated cell sorting and isometric force measurements of intact muscles. It is anticipated that the successful candidate will participate in calcium imaging studies as well as some of the other techniques listed above. The appointment will be for an initial duration of 1 year with the possibility of renewal for an additional 2 years given satisfactory progress.
