Job Description

The Director of University of Nevada Cooperative Extension (Extension) and Associate Dean for Engagement leads and administers statewide Extension programs as part of the land-grant mission of the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR). Extension is administratively consolidated with the College of Agriculture, Biotechnology and Natural Resources (CABNR), and collaborates closely with the Nevada Agricultural Experiment Station (NAES), other units within the Nevada System of Higher Education and Nevada’s counties.

The roles and responsibilities of the Director of University of Nevada Cooperative Extension and Associate Dean for Engagement include:

• Using visionary leadership to provide for continued educational, research, outreach and service programs pertaining to agriculture, community development, health and nutrition, horticulture, personal development (including but not limited to children, youth, and families), and natural resources in Nevada’s rural and urban communities.
• Working collaboratively with faculty, staff and stakeholders, including state and local leaders, industry, private organizations, non-profit organizations, school districts, government agencies, and other institutions as appropriate.
• Maintaining close relationships with federal, state and county government partners and engaging regularly with Nevada counties.
• Leading and managing all aspects of Extension, including supervision of the administrative team; budget and salary management; and the hiring, placement, tenure, annual evaluation and promotion of faculty.
• Working as a part of the administrative team reporting to the Dean of CABNR.
• Collaborating closely with Associate Deans in CABNR and leaders of other colleges with disciplines relevant to Extension’s mission to ensure effective integration of the statewide teaching, research and engagement missions of both on- and off-campus faculty of the land-grant university.
• Overseeing annual plans of work and reporting to the United States Department of Agriculture’s National Institute for Food and Agriculture (NIFA) in coordination with the NAES Director.
• Ensuring that Extension policies are NIFA-compliant.
• Furthering the engagement mission of UNR in collaboration with other colleges and units.
• Securing endowments and increasing extramural funding for Extension programs.
• Participating in the National Extension Directors and Administrators Association (NEDA) and the Western Extension Directors Association (WEDA).
• This position requires travel and a variable work schedule.

Extension brings information to solve problems and deal with critical issues throughout Nevada. Extension currently has offices in 15 out of 17 counties and programs in all 17 counties, serving urban and rural populations throughout the state.

Extension’s 35 academic faculty, more than 170 staff, and many volunteers deliver non-degree, educational programs in these areas:

• Agriculture
• Children, Youth and Families
• Economic and Community Development
• Health and Nutrition
• Horticulture
• Natural Resources

Required Qualifications

• An earned doctorate degree from an accredited institution with experience and qualifications to receive tenure as a full professor in one of the disciplines represented in Cooperative Extension.
• Minimum of five years of Cooperative Extension or academic administrative experience at the level of Chair, Area/Regional Director or higher.
• Experience managing organizational budgets and personnel.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience as an Extension faculty member at a land-grant university, and a strong record of developing research-based Extension programming.
• Proven ability to increase funding for additional academic Extension faculty, both on and off campus.
• Demonstrated ability to manage organizational change.
• Demonstrated ability to develop and communicate a clear and relevant vision and strategy as Extension develops programming to meet future needs of a diverse clientele in a changing environment.
• Experience with program development, review and quality improvement implementation.
• Demonstrated ability to clearly and effectively develop and maintain consultative and collaborative relationships with counties and/or communities; trade groups and other community organizations; and state, local and federal agencies.
• Demonstrated understanding of urban and rural community needs.
• Demonstrated ability to work with and mentor faculty and staff, and to create a positive and productive work environment.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate the Extension mission to a variety of campus, local and statewide audiences.
• Demonstrated understanding of the changing nature of social media and their use in promoting Extension programs.
